Parthenogenesis

A form of sexual reproduction (i.e. with sex cells) in which only one organism takes part. Sometimes P. is essentially cloning, where the daughter does not differ from the mother. A precise copy is produced with chromosomes that contain the same genetic material. P. helps to survive in adverse conditions where it is not possible to enrich the genes of the species through the regular reproduction of two individuals or where there is a need to increase the size of the population quickly.
